A History of Humanity’s Debt to Pigeons
Urban Doves
Objective - Pigeons have been a part of our history for about 10,000 years. Humans domesticated them, spread them across every continent, and used them as important tools for communication. In recent decades, pigeons have been given a negative reputation, despite their long history of being useful companions. Why?
Approach - Urban Doves explains the history of the relationship between humans and pigeons. From all of the different ways that pigeons were used, to the way they helped with warfare, to the modern reputation of pigeons, this book covers it all.
Execution - This project involved heavy research into the topic, writing, and designing about 45 pages. It also has some paired advertising bookmarks. The book is designed with a paper motif. As the book starts with introductions and basic history, the blank paper has sketches and looks thrown on a peg board, as if in the planning stage. As the book progresses, paper becomes more detailed and textured, and more scraps overlap. This represents the paper being sent with carrier pigeons, often in warfare. As the book discusses the change of opinion and new hatred of pigeons, the paper becomes crumpled on pavement, emphasizing the exile of pigeons onto the streets.
